How to choose the right MS beam for your project
Choosing an MS beam starts with the load it needs to carry, not the section that happens to be in stock. Span length, dead load, live load, and the spacing between supporting columns all feed into the depth and flange width you need.
Once the structural engineer signs off on a section, match it to an IS-standard designation — ISMB, ISJB, or ISWB — so procurement and site inspection can verify it against the same reference every time.
Grade matters as much as size. Fe 410 covers most general construction, but higher-stress members or coastal sites may call for a higher-grade or corrosion-treated option. When in doubt, ask your dealer for the mill test certificate before the order ships.
It's also worth confirming lead time before finalizing a section on your drawing — heavier beams and less common depths are often stocked at fewer dealers, and swapping a section late in design can ripple through connection details, bolt patterns, and even foundation loads. A short call to your dealer during design, not after tender, saves a redesign later.
