Structural angles: common use cases on site

Angles are the workhorse of light fabrication — bracing, support brackets, and frames for equipment that doesn't need a full beam's load capacity.

Their L-shaped profile makes them easy to bolt or weld at right angles, which is why they show up constantly in staircases, gates, and racking systems.

Choosing between equal and unequal angles usually comes down to the connection detail — equal angles for symmetric bracing, unequal angles where one leg needs to sit flush against a different surface.

Thickness selection is where most over-ordering happens on site. A thicker angle isn't automatically stronger for a given application if the failure mode is buckling rather than yielding — for slender bracing members, a wider leg often outperforms a thicker one at the same weight.
